Veralynn Jackson knows hair, her neighborhood, and that the invention of the Jheri Curl marks the end of the world. When she takes a job in Mr. Kim's Korean-owned Black beauty supply store and the posters start talking to her, Veralynn might finally come to know her true calling. South Side Chicago meets South Korea in this heartfelt play where a business partnership and a touch of magical realism bring these two unlikely friends closer to understanding themselves and each other.
In designing props for this show, we wanted Mr. Kim to start off having recently bought the store with more White-centered products. As the story progresses, both Mr. Kim and Veralynn stock the store to have a fuller look. Veralynn adds her own touch to the store as we progress as well with more Black-centered products and a jewelry side hustle in the counter. Each box, bottle, jar, and poster were all custom made to avoid copyright issues and be able to fit on 11"x17" paper to accomodate our printer.
